Lagos Computer Village Fire: Traders Appeal to Governor Sanwo-Olu for Urgent Financial Support

Traders affected by a devastating fire at Computer Village, Ikeja have urgently appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for financial assistance to help mitigate their substantial losses.

According to reports from LMSINT MEDIA, the inferno, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday at Somoye Street, Ikeja, destroyed goods worth several million naira. The affected building housed multiple traders specializing in computers, laptops, and electronic accessories, making it one of the busiest commercial hubs in Lagos.

Details of the Fire Outbreak

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire started shortly after midnight and quickly engulfed the upper floor of the commercial storey building. Early investigations suggest that the incident may have been caused by an electrical surge following the restoration of power supply, although official confirmation is pending. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

Upon visiting the scene on Wednesday, LMSINT MEDIA observed scavengers picking through the debris in search of salvageable items. Affected traders stood by in visible distress, many lamenting the total loss of their stock, including cash, laptops, and other high-value electronic devices.

Traders Describe Massive Losses

One trader, Chucks, who had just restocked his shop the day before the fire, described the incident as catastrophic:

“I’m one of the shop owners severely affected. I received new stock on Monday, and by early Tuesday, everything was gone. When I arrived at the scene, the upper floor was completely inaccessible. Firefighting equipment was inadequate, water pressure was low, and firefighters had to climb ladders to reach the flames.”

Appealing directly to Governor Sanwo-Olu, Chucks added:

“We are begging for government assistance and compensation. Incidents like this are recurring. We are responsible taxpayers and expect support when disaster strikes. We also urge the state to better equip fire services in busy commercial areas like Computer Village.”

Chucks revealed that none of the traders operating on the affected floors were able to save even a single item. He estimated his personal loss at around N130 million, primarily from laptops and other high-end electronics.

Another trader, Ebere Chimosor, reported losing goods valued at over N10 million and echoed calls for government intervention:

“I conduct my business here peacefully, regardless of tribe or region. All we ask is for local and state authorities to assist us. The fire service responded quickly and tried to contain the damage, but the losses were already substantial.”

Calls for Improved Fire Safety Infrastructure

The disaster has highlighted a pressing need for enhanced fire safety measures in densely populated commercial areas like Computer Village. Traders have urged both state and local authorities to invest in modern firefighting equipment, increase water pressure capabilities, and implement stricter safety protocols for electrical installations.

Following the incident, Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Akeem Dauda, visited the site to assess the damage and extend sympathy to the affected traders. He assured them of council support and emphasized the importance of strict safety compliance to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Traders are now appealing not only for immediate financial relief but also for sustainable solutions that can mitigate the impact of future disasters.
