Tragic Lagos Building Collapse Claims Two Lives, 14 Rescued from Rubble
A devastating building collapse occurred on Tuesday when a two-storey structure with a penthouse under construction gave way on Oriwu Street, Lekki, Lagos. The incident, which happened around 4 p.m., left two construction workers dead, while 14 others were successfully pulled from the debris.
Emergency responders, including the Lagos State Police Command and medical personnel, swiftly arrived at the scene to manage the rescue operations. According to CSP Benjamin Hudenyin, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, efforts were immediately mobilized to secure the area and facilitate the evacuation process.
Rescue Efforts and Investigation Underway
By 7:45 p.m., authorities confirmed the recovery of the two deceased victims. The 14 rescued workers received medical attention at the Lagos Island General Hospital. The cause of the structural failure remains uncertain, pending an official investigation.
Building collapses have been a recurring issue in Lagos, raising concerns about construction standards and regulatory compliance. Experts emphasize the need for stricter enforcement of safety measures to prevent such tragic incidents.
