A tragic incident unfolded in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos State following the collapse of a three-storey building. As of Sunday, five fatalities have been confirmed, and 20 individuals have been rescued from the wreckage, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The agency’s South-West Territorial Coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye, disclosed in a media briefing that the rescued victims included nine adult males and one adult female. Sadly, five bodies—three women and two men—were retrieved from the debris.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) initially reported one death on Saturday during early recovery efforts. However, four more casualties were confirmed on Sunday, bringing the total to five. According to Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, the deceased have been transferred to the mortuary, and the rescue operation is still ongoing.
“Emergency responders remain at the site to sustain the search and rescue mission. More updates will follow as the situation unfolds,” said Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu.
Interestingly, the Lagos State Police Command presented slightly different figures. According to Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, 23 people were rescued, and two deaths were recorded, underscoring ongoing discrepancies in casualty numbers reported by various agencies.
Search Operations Ongoing Despite Conflicting Reports
Despite the differences in data between NEMA, LASEMA, and the police, one thing remains consistent: search and rescue operations are still active. Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area while emergency teams work tirelessly to save lives and ensure no one remains trapped under the debris.
