Lagos Assembly Turmoil: Labour Party Condemns APC’s Betrayal Of Public Trust

The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State has strongly criticized the ongoing crisis within the All Progressives Congress (APC)-controlled Lagos State House of Assembly, calling it a disgraceful betrayal of public trust and a diversion from critical governance issues affecting residents.

Labour Party Reacts to the Assembly Crisis

Dr. Dayo Ekong, Chairman of the Labour Party in Lagos State, expressed disappointment over the leadership turmoil in the state legislature. The latest development saw the reinstatement of the previously removed Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, while his predecessor, Mojisola Meranda, stepped down and was reappointed as Deputy Speaker.

Ekong remarked, “It is deeply concerning that the Lagos State House of Assembly has become a battleground for political power struggles rather than a platform for governance. The APC-led lawmakers are undermining democracy and diverting attention from pressing issues faced by Lagosians.”

Governance Undermined by Political Infighting

The LP chairperson emphasized that elected officials are meant to serve the people, yet the current situation highlights self-interest over public welfare. She pointed out that while residents grapple with deteriorating infrastructure, insecurity, and economic challenges, the Assembly is entangled in avoidable disputes.

“This blatant waste of taxpayer resources and legislative time is unacceptable,” Ekong added. “Public officials must prioritize service delivery over political squabbles.”

Labour Party Calls for Immediate Accountability

The Labour Party demands a transparent and independent investigation into the allegations surrounding the Assembly crisis, urging that those responsible be held accountable. Ekong reiterated that lawmakers derive their legitimacy from the electorate, not political godfathers.

She further stated, “The Labour Party remains committed to advocating for transparent and inclusive governance. We call on the Assembly to focus on legislative duties or step aside for those willing to serve the public with integrity.”

Lagos Deserves Better Governance

With Lagosians facing numerous socio-economic challenges, Ekong stressed that the time for political distractions must end. She urged lawmakers to act responsibly and put the interests of the people first.

“Enough is enough. The residents of Lagos deserve leadership that is focused on governance, not internal conflicts,” she concluded.
