Lagos, Nigeria – Reports indicate that Mojisola Meranda, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, may step down from her position, but only if the resignation occurs during a plenary session. This condition was revealed following the Assembly’s indefinite adjournment on Monday, February 17, after 36 out of 40 members expressed confidence in her leadership.

Meranda’s Stipulation for Resignation

Following mediation efforts by key figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC), an agreement was reportedly reached for Meranda to step down. However, sources confirm that the process must adhere to legislative procedures and take place during a reconvened plenary session.

A reliable source stated, “If the Speaker steps down, it must be conducted officially in plenary. She cannot resign arbitrarily without following due process.” The timeline for reconvening the Assembly remains uncertain, leaving the current leadership unchanged until further notice.

Additionally, there are indications that Meranda may return to her previous role as Deputy Speaker once she relinquishes her current position.
