Abuja, Nigeria – Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has firmly stated that the leadership structure of the party remains intact, cautioning against attempts to create confusion ahead of a planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
Abure’s comments came just days before a scheduled NEC gathering organized by former presidential candidate Peter Obi and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, which is set to hold on Wednesday in Abuja. The event is also expected to feature a town hall session with stakeholders at the Transcorp Hilton.
“There is no leadership vacuum in the Labour Party. Let it be known that we do not abandon our own, even when others choose to betray us,” Abure said during a press briefing at the party’s national secretariat.
He condemned the recent interpretation of a Supreme Court ruling that some claimed suggested a shift in LP’s internal authority. According to him, the apex court was clear that matters regarding political party administration are strictly internal affairs.
Abure Labels Obi and Otti as Disloyal
Without mincing words, Abure described Obi and Otti’s actions as “acts of betrayal,” suggesting that they are attempting to destabilize the party after benefitting from its platform.
“The Constitution of the Labour Party does not support the creation of caretaker committees. I remain the National Chairman, and this position is backed by both our party rules and legal precedents,” Abure emphasized.
This power tussle has further highlighted growing tensions within the LP, with prominent voices like Peter Obi and Alex Otti pushing for restructuring and leadership reforms, while Abure insists on constitutional order.
