Labour Party Suspends Governor Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, And Others Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

On Wednesday, May 7, 2025, the Labour Party (LP) announced the indefinite suspension of six prominent members, including Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, Senator Darlington Nwokocha, Hon. Victor Afam Ogene, Hon. Amobi Ogah, and Hon. Seyi Sowunmi. This decision follows the submission of a report by a five-member Disciplinary Committee established on May 2, 2025, by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to investigate allegations of anti-party activities against these individuals.

The Disciplinary Committee, led by Deputy National Chairman Dr. Ayo Olorunfemi and National Secretary Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, concluded its investigation and presented its findings to the party leadership. Subsequently, the NEC convened on May 7, 2025, and, after thorough deliberation, ratified the committee’s recommendations, leading to the immediate and indefinite suspension of the aforementioned members.

In a statement issued by National Secretary Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party emphasized that the suspended individuals are barred from representing or acting on behalf of the Labour Party in any capacity. Relevant institutions, including the Nigeria Governors Forum, the National Assembly, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and security agencies, have been notified of this development.

Addressing concerns about Nenadi Usman’s absence from the suspension list, the party clarified that she is not a registered member of the Labour Party but is affiliated with the Obidient Support Group, which supported the party’s 2023 presidential candidate. The party stated that it would not impose sanctions on individuals who are not official members.

Furthermore, the Labour Party reiterated its stance against forming coalitions or mergers ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party expressed skepticism about the capabilities of those advocating for such alliances, citing concerns about their competence and integrity. The Labour Party affirmed its intention to contest the upcoming elections independently.
