A tragic accident involving a heavy-duty trailer carrying palm oil and firewood en route to Abuja has resulted in the deaths of five students from the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) in Kogi State. The devastating crash occurred at Felele, Lokoja, when the trailer collided with a shuttle transporting students to campus.
Federal University Lokoja in Mourning
The entire university community has been plunged into sorrow following the fatal incident. In an official statement, the Deputy Registrar of Human Resources, Vincent Ojo, expressed deep sadness over the loss of the promising students.
“It is with profound grief that we announce the passing of five of our beloved students who lost their lives in a tragic trailer accident. The university community is in deep mourning over this heartbreaking event,” Ojo stated.
Incident Details and School’s Response
The accident, which took place on Monday, has led the university to implement mourning measures as a mark of respect for the deceased students. In honor of the victims, FUL has declared lecture-free days from 12 noon on Tuesday, 18th February, and throughout Wednesday, 19th February 2025.
Additionally, the university flag will be flown at half-mast while all official activities will be conducted on a low scale during the mourning period. The varsity’s management extended heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased, as well as the entire university community, urging everyone to stay strong during this difficult time.
Kogi State Government Offers Condolences
In response to the tragic incident, Kogi State Deputy Governor, Salifu Joel Oyibo, visited the university to commiserate with the management, staff, and students. He assured the student body that urgent measures would be put in place to curb frequent accidents along the Felele axis.
According to a statement shared on the university’s official social media pages, the deputy governor reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing road safety in the area to prevent further tragedies.
