Lokoja, Kogi State — In a decisive disciplinary action, Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has officially terminated the employment of a lecturer, Mr. Mukhtar Muhammed, following allegations of sexual harassment involving a student. This move reflects the institution’s commitment to upholding a safe and professional academic environment.

In another separate disciplinary measure, the polytechnic also dismissed Mrs. Funmilayo Afolabi, a staff member who had been absent from her duties for a continuous period of nine months. The institution emphasized that prolonged absenteeism without valid justification is unacceptable and undermines the quality of education.

Mrs. Uredo Omale, the Polytechnic’s Director of Public Relations and Protocol, provided an official statement regarding these actions on Sunday. She revealed that these disciplinary decisions were made during the 72nd Regular Meeting of the Governing Council, held at the Polytechnic’s Council Chamber. The meeting was presided over by the Chairman, Barrister Sani Shaibu, and included far-reaching resolutions aimed at strengthening institutional governance and staff accountability.

Promotions and Institutional Decisions

During the council meeting, 11 Principal Lecturers were promoted to the rank of Chief Lecturers, alongside 572 other teaching and non-teaching staff who received recognition for their dedication and contributions to the institution. These promotions were recommended by the Appointments, Promotions, and Disciplinary Committee (AP&DC).

Among those elevated to the Chief Lecturer rank were:

  • Mr. Ehimony James Baba Tunde and Mrs. Ajayi Omolola Felicia from the School of Applied Sciences
  • Engr. Anikoh Godwin Ateiza from the School of Engineering Technology
  • Dr. Acharu Faith Tony-Okeme and Dr. Raji Abdulwasiu Adeyemi from the School of Management Studies
  • Mrs. Akinola Hope Ojochide, Mrs. Olayiwola Grace Eleojo, and Mr. Aminu Fasasi Olanrewaju from the School of General and Communication Studies
  • Mr. Boluromi Samuel Sunday, whose promotion reflects his outstanding contributions to academic excellence

These steps are part of the polytechnic’s ongoing effort to reward dedicated staff members while ensuring that disciplinary breaches, such as sexual misconduct and prolonged absenteeism, are addressed firmly and transparently.

Upholding Academic Integrity

Kogi State Polytechnic has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy regarding misconduct and ethical violations. The institution continues to prioritize the safety, well-being, and rights of students, aligning with national guidelines on educational standards and best practices in Nigerian higher institutions.

Staff and students are encouraged to adhere strictly to the institution’s code of conduct, with the assurance that any form of harassment or dereliction of duty will be met with appropriate disciplinary action.

This recent action also serves as a strong message to other tertiary institutions in Nigeria, reinforcing the importance of ethical practices, transparency, and accountability in academia.
