King Charles and Queen Camilla Delay Visit to the Vatican Over Pope Francis’ Health

King Charles III and Queen Camilla have officially postponed their anticipated state visit to the Vatican, which was initially scheduled for early April. The decision follows medical advice from the pope’s doctors, urging him to take an extended period of rest and recovery.

Buckingham Palace Confirms Postponement

A statement from Buckingham Palace on Tuesday revealed that Pope Francis has been advised to prioritize his health.

“Medical advice has now suggested that Pope Francis would benefit from an extended period of rest and recuperation.

“Their Majesties send the pope their best wishes for his convalescence and look forward to visiting him in The Holy See, once he has recovered,” the statement read.

Pope Francis’ Recent Health Struggles

Pope Francis, 88, has been facing significant health challenges. Earlier this year, in February, the head of the global Catholic Church was diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs, raising concerns about his well-being. After spending nearly 40 days at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, he was discharged on Sunday and has since been recuperating at the Santa Marta guesthouse within Vatican City.

The Vatican reported that while Pope Francis has been undergoing breathing and speech therapy, he has refrained from receiving visitors apart from his closest associates. No official date has been set for his next public appearance.

King Charles’ Historic Visit to the Vatican Now on Hold

As the head of the Church of England, King Charles III had planned to meet Pope Francis on April 8. The visit was set to be his first to the Vatican since ascending the throne. However, by mutual agreement with the Holy See, the trip has been postponed indefinitely.

King Charles last visited the Vatican in 2019 when he was still heir to the British throne.
