In a heartfelt appeal to Kano’s political leaders, Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima has stressed the urgent need for unity, urging all factions in the state to put aside political hostilities for the greater good.
Shettima shared this message on Saturday evening during a condolence visit to the Emir of Kano’s palace, following the passing of the late Galadiman Kano, Alhaji Abbas Sunusi. Addressing an assembly that included Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, APC State Chairman Abdullahi Abbas, and representatives from both the Kwankwasiyya and Gandujiyya political camps, Shettima underlined that discord in Kano could send negative ripples throughout the North.
“A state like Kano, known for its political influence and cultural depth, should never be a ground for political friction,” he remarked, encouraging reconciliation between opposing parties.
The Vice President warned that continued disunity in Kano State—a region he described as the “heartbeat of Northern Nigeria“—could lead to broader instability across the geopolitical zone.
“When Kano sneezes, the North catches cold,” he said, underscoring the state’s significant political and economic clout.
To foster a more personal connection, Shettima chose to speak in Hausa, despite not being a native speaker, to ensure his words resonated clearly with local listeners.
“I may not be fluent, but I spoke in Hausa so that the people of Kano can fully understand my sincerity,” he added.
Alongside his political message, Shettima also prayed for the soul of the late Galadiman Kano, hoping for divine mercy and eternal rest for the revered traditional leader.
The Vice President also acknowledged the recent tragedy in Shanono Local Government Area, where suspected bandits claimed lives and abducted several residents. He extended his condolences to the affected families and prayed for an end to insecurity across the nation.
“We pray for lasting peace not only in Kano but throughout Nigeria,” he concluded.
