Kano Women and Girls Storm Streets in Protest Against Killings and Thuggery

In Kano State, a group of distressed women and young girls staged a public protest in the Kofar Mata axis, a region notoriously plagued by violent thuggery and frequent killings. The demonstration was a response to the ongoing bloodshed that has robbed many of their loved ones.

On Saturday, the demonstrators—comprising mothers, sisters, and daughters—marched boldly through the streets, calling for an immediate and lasting end to the wave of violence sweeping through their communities.

Chanting emotionally charged slogans and wielding placards, the protesters demanded urgent governmental intervention. “Our sons are dying for no reason. Every day, there’s a stabbing, a killing, or some violent fight,” a heartbroken mother cried out during the protest.

Another woman, visibly frustrated, added, “This cannot go on any longer.”

Kano has recently experienced a dangerous spike in urban violence. Street crimes such as thuggery, phone snatching, and gang clashes have become daily occurrences, fueling anxiety among residents.

Disturbing incidents were reported on July 31st and August 1st, 2025, when rival groups clashed violently in the same troubled area.

A local health worker, Sadiya Umar, shared her personal account with LMSINT MEDIA: “I passed through the area today. I heard the blast of tear gas and what I believe were gunshots.”

Although she confirmed no reported fatalities, she emphasized the fear and trauma caused by the volatile environment.

The deteriorating security has resulted in the tragic loss of young lives, as many teenagers and youths are increasingly caught in the deadly conflict among street gangs.

One recent and shocking case emerged from Nassarawa Local Government Area, where a gang of phone snatchers, having just robbed victims at knifepoint, was hit by a vehicle while trying to escape. The incident was captured on video and widely circulated online, depicting the suspects being overpowered and brutally beaten by furious residents before being turned over to the police.

Such community-led reprisals are becoming more common, fueled by frustration over the perceived inefficiency of law enforcement. In several instances, angry mobs have taken justice into their own hands, catching and severely punishing suspects before involving the authorities.

Reacting to the alarming trend, the Kano State Police Command initiated Operation Kukan Kura in early 2025. This special security operation specifically targets criminal gangs involved in phone snatching and youth-related violence, particularly those associated with the local group known as ‘Yan Daba’.

According to the police, Operation Kukan Kura has made measurable progress, resulting in multiple arrests and intensified security patrols across crime-prone areas. Despite these efforts, many residents remain skeptical and insist that more consistent and strategic interventions are necessary to restore peace and protect innocent lives.
