Kano State Investment Promotion Agency (KANINVEST) has taken a bold step toward sustainable energy and economic growth by signing a $15 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with STATA Power Utility Nigeria Limited. The agreement focuses on the implementation of a customised Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) programme aimed at reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and creating job opportunities across Kano State.
A Greener Future for Kano State
Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony held at KANINVEST headquarters in Kano, the agency’s Director General, Muhammad Nazir Halliru, described the deal as a significant milestone in transitioning to cleaner energy solutions. He highlighted that the programme will address rising petroleum costs, support industrial growth, and reduce transportation expenses by introducing CNG as an alternative to traditional fuel sources.
“This initiative will not only support vehicles in Kano but will also cater to industries and major companies seeking cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy options,” Halliru said.
Programme Highlights
The CNG programme will include the supply of compressed natural gas, vehicle conversion kits, and the establishment of conversion centers across the state. The initiative will also involve:
- Solar-powered tricycles and vehicles: In its first year, the project aims to introduce 5,000 solar-powered tricycles and 10 commercial vehicles.
- Gas stations across Kano State: A central “mother station” with a 110 metric-ton capacity will be established in Tamburawa, Kura Local Government Area, along with smaller stations at strategic locations, including Dalladi Nasidi, Maiduguri Road, and IBB Road.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
The programme aligns with global trends toward sustainable energy and promises a positive environmental impact by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. STATA Power Utility’s Chief Executive Officer, Salman Dantata, emphasized the economic and environmental benefits, stating:
- Lower transportation costs for residents and businesses
- Enhanced energy efficiency and industrial productivity
- Over 300 direct and 5,000 indirect jobs in the first five years of operation
“The project demonstrates Kano’s commitment to cleaner energy solutions and its readiness to embrace industrialisation while prioritising environmental sustainability,” Dantata noted.
Timeline and Government Incentives
The project is set to begin within six months, with Governor Abba Yusuf approving additional incentives, including tax waivers for this pioneer investment.

STATA Power Utility aims to expand its reach, targeting 20 operational stations in five years. This long-term vision will solidify Kano’s role as a leader in Nigeria’s transition to greener energy solutions while fostering economic development and innovation.
