NG In a significant political move, Senator Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents the Kano South Senatorial District, has officially parted ways with the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was confirmed through a press release issued in Kano on Wednesday, where Senator Sumaila emphasized that his decision was driven by his dedication to the wellbeing of his constituents.
“Yes, the speculation is accurate. My decision to join APC is rooted in my belief that politics is ultimately about local interests. My people come first,” he stated.
Before clinching his Senate seat under the NNPP banner in the 2023 general elections, Senator Kawu served as the Senior Special Assistant to former President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly (House of Representatives) matters. His experience at the federal level continues to shape his commitment to legislative representation.
Focus on Constituency Welfare
The senator noted that he believes the All Progressives Congress offers a more viable platform to pursue meaningful development for the people of Kano South.
His move to the APC comes on the heels of his suspension by the Kano NNPP faction led by Hashimu Dungurawa, over alleged anti-party conduct. Sumaila, however, dismissed the accusations, labeling them as unfounded and politically motivated.
This defection is part of a broader trend within the NNPP, as other party members have faced disciplinary actions over alleged alignments with the APC. These include Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum (Rano/Kibiya federal constituency), Hon. Ali Madakin Gini (Dala federal constituency), and Hon. Sani Abdullahi Rogo (Rogo/Karaye federal constituency).
