Surprise Barricade at Kano Emir’s Palace
A surprising incident unfolded in Kano City as security operatives sealed off the entrance to the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. This action disrupted planned activities and raised questions about its motive and origin.
State Government Points Fingers at Federal Authorities
Abdullahi Baffa Bichi, the Secretary to the Kano State Government, openly criticized the Federal Government for allegedly ordering the barricade. Speaking on a local radio station, Bichi expressed shock over the development, labeling it a deliberate attempt to disturb the state’s peace.
“We were really surprised waking up to this development with police sealing off the entrance to the palace of Kano Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II,” he remarked.
Accusations of External Interference
Bichi further alleged that the disruption stemmed from directives issued by Federal authorities. “What surprises us the most is that Kano is peaceful, but it’s just a few people with the backing of Abuja who don’t want Kano to be peaceful,” he stated.
Impact on Planned Ceremonial Activities
The blockade hindered the Emir’s plan to escort the newly appointed district head of Bichi, Wamban Kano, to his district for prayers and ceremonial events. Bichi elaborated:
“The emir was to escort his district head of Bichi, Wamban Kano, pray with him there, and then come back. We were all invited and woke up to this unexpected development.”
Reasons for the Barricade
When questioned about the rationale behind the action, Bichi claimed the police cited orders from higher authorities. “We asked the reason, and they told us it was an order given to them from above. Who is there above? It’s the Federal Government,” he alleged.
Commitment to Peace and Progress
Despite the disruptions, the Kano State Government vowed to ensure peace and proceed with the planned activities.
“We in Kano have resolved to stay in peace; peace will reign, and nobody will come to Kano and destabilize that,” Bichi affirmed.
He also reiterated the legitimacy of the Emir’s appointment of the district head. “The emir has appointed the district head, and it stands. He will take him to his place, and whenever he is ready to go there, we are going there with him—no going back,” he concluded.
