Kano Deputy Governor Criticized for Alleged Disrespectful Comments
The Women Lawyers Congress has urged Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to address and clarify alleged derogatory remarks made by his Deputy Governor, Aminu Abdussalam. The controversy stems from a viral video in which Abdussalam reportedly made offensive comments about ‘Gwaggo,’ a term referring to former First Lady Hafsat Abdullahi Ganduje.
Women Lawyers Congress Demands Accountability
In a statement released on Tuesday, Barrister Nafisa Abba Ismail, Chairlady of the Women Lawyers Congress, condemned the Deputy Governor’s remarks, calling them part of a worrying trend of disrespecting respected figures.
“Such conduct is unbecoming of a leader. Leadership requires ethical standards and respect for all, especially women in governance,” she stated.
Call for Public Clarification and Apology
The Congress has requested Governor Yusuf to publicly clarify that the remarks were not directed at Professor Hafsat Umar Ganduje. If they were, the Deputy Governor is expected to issue a formal apology to both Professor Ganduje and the people of Kano.
Barrister Nafisa stressed that this issue is beyond personal disputes, as it pertains to principles of dignity and women’s representation in leadership roles. She further warned that if such behavior continues, legal action will be taken against the Deputy Governor.
The Importance of Respect in Leadership
The statement also highlighted the responsibility of public figures in maintaining decorum and urged immediate measures to prevent leaders from setting negative precedents.
“Public officials should use their influence to promote inclusivity and respect, not undermine women in governance,” the Congress emphasized.
Conclusion
As the controversy unfolds, the Women Lawyers Congress stands firm in advocating for accountability and respect for women in leadership. The ball is now in the Governor’s court to address the issue and ensure ethical governance in Kano State. Read more on ethical governance and leadership standards
