The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has disclosed critical information regarding the recent escalation of terrorist activities in Nigeria’s North East and North West regions.

The military has identified the involvement of foreign fighters as a key factor driving the surge in attacks on military installations and civilian populations. These foreign actors, reportedly from the Sahelian region, have joined forces with local terrorist groups, amplifying the threat level.

Foreign Fighters and Local Collaboration

During the year’s first military briefing on Thursday, Maj. Gen. Buba Edward, the outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations, shed light on this development.

“The spike in terror attacks is largely due to the arrival of foreign fighters who serve as reinforcements for these terrorist groups,” Edward explained. “These individuals, originating from the Sahelian region, collaborate with local informants who provide critical intelligence, including details of troops’ movements.”

Edward further emphasized that despite these challenges, the Nigerian military remains resolute in its mission to eradicate terrorism.

Military Strategy to Break Terrorist Will

Maj. Gen. Edward outlined the military’s ongoing efforts to dismantle the operational capacity of these terrorist groups. He highlighted that the strategy focuses on:

Neutralizing key operatives, commanders, and senior leaders.
Disrupting their logistics, administrative, and fighting capabilities.
Applying regional and international pressure.
Leveraging media engagement to counter propaganda.

“Our ultimate goal is to break the terrorists’ will to fight,” Edward stated. “This is not just about tactical wins but achieving a strategic victory that eliminates their ability and motivation to continue their attacks.”

Acknowledging the complexities of the mission, Edward reassured Nigerians of the military’s unwavering commitment.

“This war is not a quick fix; it’s a long-term operation. However, we remain focused on our objective to ensure these terrorists are completely neutralized.
