Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has emphasized that June 12 stands as a pivotal day in Nigeria’s enduring quest for democratic governance and national unity.
In a post shared on his verified Facebook account to commemorate Democracy Day, Governor Uba Sani reflected on the legacy of the historic June 12, 1993 election. He stated that the day marked a significant breakthrough in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, where citizens chose unity over division by casting their votes overwhelmingly for Chief MKO Abiola.
“On June 12, 1993, Nigerians looked beyond ethnicity, religion, and region, and voted massively for MKO Abiola in an election widely regarded as the most transparent and credible in our nation’s history,” the governor wrote.
Governor Sani noted that the outcome of that election showcased Nigeria’s deep-rooted desire for democracy and national cohesion. However, he acknowledged the pain caused by the annulment of the election, describing it as a tragic moment that, nonetheless, ignited a widespread movement for the restoration of civil rule.
“Although the annulment marked a grim period in our political history, it became a driving force that mobilized activists and ordinary Nigerians toward the pursuit of democratic ideals,” he said.
Reflecting on the democratic strides made since 1999, Governor Uba Sani urged citizens to evaluate Nigeria’s democratic progress while being mindful of the socio-economic and security issues that still confront the nation.
“Despite the existing economic and security concerns, these are not challenges we cannot overcome. With unity, resilience, and collective effort, we shall prevail,” he affirmed.
The governor highlighted his administration’s commitment to strengthening democracy in Kaduna State. According to him, the government adopts an inclusive and participatory governance model rooted in accountability and transparency, keeping the people at the core of its development strategy.
He emphasized that democracy is not a fixed achievement but a continuous journey that requires consistent civic participation and dedication.
“Democracy is an evolving process. It demands that we stay alert, involved, and united in purpose. As we celebrate this important day, we must renew our resolve to uphold the values of freedom, justice, and equity.”
Governor Uba Sani concluded his message with a call for unity and commitment to democratic principles for the betterment of Kaduna State and Nigeria at large.
“Let us recommit ourselves to democratic ideals and work together for a just and prosperous future. May the courage and sacrifices of our past heroes continue to guide and inspire us.“
