João Cancelo Returns to Barcelona on Loan from Al-Hilal – Deco Praised for Successful Transfer

Barcelona has officially confirmed the return of Portuguese defender João Cancelo, who joins the Spanish giants on a loan deal from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal for the remainder of the season. The 31-year-old full-back previously spent a year at Barcelona on loan from Manchester City, making 32 LaLiga appearances in the 2023 campaign.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta praised the efforts of sporting director Deco, highlighting his instrumental role in securing Cancelo’s return. Speaking to TV3, Laporta said, “João Cancelo arrives tomorrow for his medical examination and will soon be part of our squad. This signing is another remarkable success for Deco. Acquiring top players in this competitive market is challenging, and Deco has done an outstanding job.”

Cancelo, who has had an illustrious career with clubs like Manchester City, Juventus, Benfica, and Bayern Munich, first moved to Al-Hilal in August 2024. Despite suffering two hamstring injuries last year that kept him sidelined for over two months, he made a strong comeback in time for the Club World Cup, assisting a crucial goal in Al-Hilal’s 4-3 win over Manchester City in the round of 16.

The Portuguese international, who was part of the Portugal squad that won the 2018-19 UEFA Nations League, played a pivotal role in the national team’s qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

Barcelona confirmed in an official statement that Cancelo will wear the number two shirt for the remainder of the season. The club emphasized that this agreement with Al-Hilal Saudi FC marks a significant reinforcement for their defensive line as they aim to maintain their dominance in LaLiga and perform strongly in European competitions.
