Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has made his stance clear ahead of the UEFA Champions League semi-final showdown between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Despite Arsenal’s impressive campaign, Carragher is not backing the Premier League side to lift the trophy.
Instead, the football pundit expressed support for PSG to claim the Champions League title, stating that their current team setup would make the victory significant for the future of football.
The semi-final clash between Arsenal and PSG is set to commence next week, with the winner advancing to face either Barcelona or Inter Milan in the final, scheduled to take place in Germany next month.
Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher said:
“I can’t say I’d like to see Arsenal win it because I’d just be lying. I don’t like to see other English teams winning big European competitions.”
He went on to explain that a PSG victory would symbolize a positive shift in their team’s philosophy, especially after moving past the era of Messi, Neymar, and Mbappé.
“If PSG won it, it’s almost good for the game in that they have had Messi, Neymar and Mbappé and are now transitioning into a new era with young, dynamic talents. They’ve become more of a unit.”
Arsenal reached the semi-finals by knocking out Real Madrid, while PSG advanced after defeating Aston Villa in a thrilling quarter-final.
