Israeli airstrikes killed 42 people on Wednesday as forces intensified their siege of northern Gaza, surrounding hospitals and refugee shelters, and instructing residents to move south, according to medics and locals.
Displaced Palestinians, ordered to evacuate by the Israeli military, were seen fleeing operations in northern Gaza, particularly in Jabalia, and traveling toward Gaza City along the main Salah al-Din road.
Families, many with injured members, sought refuge in hospitals like Kamal Adwan in Beit Lahia, where the emergency halls were overwhelmed with casualties from the bombardment.
The Gaza health ministry reported that 650 people had died since the renewed offensive began, with 37 of the 42 deaths on Wednesday occurring in northern Gaza. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) confirmed the death of one of its staff members after an UNRWA vehicle was hit in Deir Al-Balah, with the man’s brother also killed in the strike.
Gaza City officials reported the deaths of two municipal workers and injuries to three others in a separate attack.Northern Gaza’s hospitals have been heavily impacted by the siege, with some halting services entirely.
Medics refusing to evacuate have reported severe shortages of medical supplies, including blood for transfusions, and even coffins for the dead. The World Health Organization and Gaza’s health ministry also announced they were unable to begin a planned polio vaccination campaign in the north due to the ongoing bombings, mass displacement, and lack of access.
The overall death toll in Gaza is nearing 43,000, as confirmed by the health ministry, and international pressure, including from Washington, is mounting for Israel to allow more humanitarian aid into the region.
