Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lead counsel representing Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has strongly cautioned the Federal Government of Nigeria against substituting meaningful dialogue with the use of military force in addressing the growing agitations and insecurity across the nation.

Ejiofor emphasized that justice and peace cannot be achieved through the barrel of a gun, insisting that the government’s continued reliance on military tactics to silence legitimate demands for justice is counterproductive and dangerous. According to him, rather than resolving issues, the excessive use of force only deepens the mistrust between citizens and the authorities.

Speaking on the ongoing detainment of his client, Nnamdi Kanu, Ejiofor highlighted that the government’s approach to addressing self-determination movements has largely ignored constitutional dialogue and political engagement. He pointed out that history has shown that no society attains lasting peace through violence, but through genuine communication and fairness.

He stressed that the situation in Nigeria today demands urgent national reflection. In his words, “The government cannot silence justice with bullets or threats. True peace comes from dialogue and mutual understanding, not oppression.” Ejiofor called for a more civil approach to national unity, urging the authorities to listen to the cries of marginalized groups instead of labeling them as enemies of the state.

The human rights lawyer also reminded the government that suppressing dissent through force only strengthens the resolve of those seeking freedom. He warned that continued disregard for the rule of law and judicial orders in Nnamdi Kanu’s case would further erode public confidence in the justice system.

Ejiofor appealed to the Nigerian people to remain law-abiding and steadfast in their pursuit of peace and fairness, while urging the international community to hold the Nigerian government accountable for respecting human rights and democratic principles.

He concluded that dialogue remains the only sustainable path toward resolving political differences and achieving national stability. The lawyer also reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Nnamdi Kanu receives a fair trial in accordance with Nigeria’s constitutional provisions.
