Insecurity: Niger Government Directs Kainji Lake Settlements to Vacate Within Two Months

The Niger State Government has issued a clear two-month ultimatum to individuals residing in small settlements and hamlets around the Kainji Lake axis, directing them to vacate the area ahead of an organised resettlement process to be coordinated by the Emirate Council.

This directive was disclosed in an official statement released on Wednesday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Bologi Ibrahim.

According to the statement, Governor Muhammad Umar Bago made this decision known during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad-Haliru Dantoro, Kitoro IV, at the royal palace in New Bussa. The visit followed a recent terrorist assault within the Emirate that resulted in the loss of several lives.

Governor Bago explained that the planned relocation of residents had become unavoidable due to prevailing security challenges in the area. He noted that his administration, working closely with the Federal Government, is committed to reclaiming the forests surrounding Kainji Lake, which have reportedly become operational bases for criminal elements.

The governor emphasized that clearing the forest would inevitably make the environment unsafe for continued civilian habitation, hence the need to relocate communities in order to prevent unintended casualties during security operations.

He also expressed concern over the increasing movement of unidentified individuals into the Emirate without proper profiling, describing the situation as a growing security risk. According to him, the activities of informants within the area have further complicated efforts by security agencies to restore peace and stability.

Governor Bago therefore called on the Emirate Council to actively support government initiatives by collaborating with security forces at all levels to address insecurity and protect lives and property across the region.

While extending his sympathies, the governor conveyed his deepest condolences to the Emir, the people of Borgu Emirate, and the families affected by the attack. He also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of those who lost their lives.

Speaking on the matter, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Abdullahi, reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring peace and security nationwide. He stated that relocating residents from the affected areas would be a positive step, allowing the reclaimed forest zones to be secured and later repurposed for broader community development.

Dr. Abdullahi added that taking decisive action to relocate vulnerable populations while restoring government control over the forest would significantly enhance safety and long-term land use within the region.
