Strengthening Electoral Democracy in West Africa

The Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has emphasized the urgent need for stronger collaboration among West African electoral commissions. This call was made during the Extraordinary General Assembly of the ECOWAS Network of Electoral Commissions (ECONEC) held in Banjul, The Gambia.

Speaking at the regional meeting, Prof. Yakubu highlighted that enhanced cooperation among Election Management Bodies (EMBs) is vital for sustaining and deepening democratic governance across the sub-region.

“To safeguard democracy, we must work together more than ever,” he said, stressing the value of unity and knowledge-sharing.

Pushing for Electoral Innovations and Shared Resources

A major focus of the General Assembly is the adoption of a revised ECONEC statute, which includes the proposal to create Africa’s first electoral resource-sharing database. This initiative is expected to foster improved coordination and efficiency among member states.

Prof. Yakubu, who once served as President of the ECONEC Steering Committee, took the opportunity to pay tribute to former members of the Network whose contributions helped bolster electoral systems both nationally and continentally.

Democracy Under Threat but Hope Remains

Recalling the progress made by the region, Yakubu noted that as of 2017, all ECOWAS countries were under democratic rule. However, he expressed concern that four countries have since transitioned away from democratic governance.

“While this setback is troubling, I remain hopeful that democracy will soon be restored in these nations,” he added.

A Farewell Note and Dismissal of False Reports

Prof. Yakubu also shared that this appearance at ECONEC may be his last as INEC Chairman, as his tenure is set to conclude later in the year. Despite rumors earlier this week that he had been removed from office and replaced, the reports were confirmed to be false. The INEC leadership remains unchanged as of now.

Regional Leaders Join the Call for Unity

Other heads of electoral commissions echoed Prof. Yakubu’s sentiments, reinforcing the need for mutual support, transparency, and regional cooperation in the pursuit of credible and fair elections.

Why Regional Electoral Collaboration Matters

Promoting shared best practices and resources among West African nations is key to:

  • Ensuring free and fair elections
  • Building public trust in electoral institutions
  • Encouraging peaceful democratic transitions
  • Strengthening institutional resilience against political interference
