Death Toll Rises in Ibadan Stampede: Police Arrest Organizers, Including Ooni’s Ex-Wife
A tragic stampede at a children’s funfair held at Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan, has left 35 children dead and six others critically injured, according to reports from the Oyo State Police Command. The heartbreaking incident occurred on Wednesday during an event organized by the Wings Foundation in collaboration with media partner Agidigbo FM.
In a statement released by the police spokesman, Adewale Osifeso, the authorities confirmed the arrest of several individuals linked to the tragedy. Among those detained is Naomi Silekunola, the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, alongside the school principal and five others. The event was reportedly held without obtaining proper approval or implementing essential safety measures.
The police have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the cause of the incident and identify those accountable. Authorities have also assured the public that the organizers will face justice for any negligence leading to the devastating loss of lives.
In a condolence message, the Oyo State Police Command extended sympathies to the victims’ families and vowed to ensure steps are taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
