Hamas has declared that the next move in the ongoing Gaza truce negotiations rests with Israel. The Palestinian militant group announced its willingness to release a 21-year-old Israeli-American hostage and repatriate the remains of four other individuals, contingent on specific conditions.
Stalled Negotiations Amid Truce Efforts
Despite Hamas’s proposal, Israeli officials argue that there has been no real progress in the discussions. The initial ceasefire phase, which commenced in January, ended on March 1 without a clear path forward. Fresh talks initiated in Doha on Tuesday aimed to break the deadlock.
According to Hamas spokesperson Abdul Latif al-Qanou, Israel is delaying the agreement’s execution, particularly in allowing humanitarian aid to enter Gaza, which has faced blockages since March 2.
Proposed Conditions for Hostage Release
A Hamas political bureau representative, speaking anonymously, detailed the proposal involving the release of soldier Edan Alexander, who was abducted during the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack. Additionally, four deceased Israeli-American hostages would be returned. In exchange, Hamas demands the release of Palestinian prisoners, with the specific number yet to be finalized.
Furthermore, Hamas has insisted that this exchange must coincide with negotiations on implementing the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, which would be concluded within a 50-day timeframe. Additional stipulations include the immediate reopening of all border crossings for humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Philadelphi corridor.
Israel and U.S. Respond to Hamas Proposal
The Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, has dismissed Hamas’s actions as “manipulation and psychological warfare.” Netanyahu’s office confirmed that a high-level ministerial meeting would take place to review the latest proposal and determine the next steps for hostage recovery efforts.
Meanwhile, the White House has criticized Hamas’s conditions as “entirely impractical,” asserting that the group is making a miscalculated assumption that time works in its favor.
Ongoing Hostage Crisis in Gaza
During the first phase of the truce, which lasted six weeks beginning January 19, Hamas released 33 hostages—eight of whom were already deceased—in exchange for around 1,800 Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons. However, 58 hostages remain in Gaza, with the Israeli military confirming that 34 of them are deceased.
