Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has addressed the surprising decision that saw Omar Marmoush take a penalty during the FA Cup final clash against Crystal Palace, rather than regular taker Erling Haaland.
The tightly contested match ended in a 1-0 victory for Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium, with Eberechi Eze scoring the game’s lone goal during the opening half.
City were handed a crucial opportunity to draw level before halftime, after a foul on Bernardo Silva led the referee to award a penalty.
Despite Haaland’s usual role as the designated penalty taker, the Norwegian striker stepped aside and allowed Marmoush to take the shot.
Unfortunately for City, Marmoush’s penalty was saved by Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, who delivered a standout performance with several more key saves that preserved his team’s narrow lead and ultimately secured the title.
When questioned about the surprising switch in penalty duties, Guardiola responded briefly:
“I don’t know, I didn’t speak to them. They made a decision. They decide.”
