In a deeply unsettling event, the Jigawa State Police Command has taken into custody a 20-year-old groom, Auwal Abdulwahab, alongside three of his friends, for allegedly forcing his newlywed bride into non-consensual sexual acts, leading to her untimely death.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, disclosed this in a press statement made available to LMSINT MEDIA.
According to the statement, the incident unfolded late in the evening around 10:00 PM on April 26, 2025, at Tungo village in Albasu District, located within Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area.
SP Shiisu reported that preliminary investigations suggest that Abdulwahab, with the collaboration of his three associates—Nura Basiru, Muttaka Lawan, and Hamisu Musa—forced entry into the matrimonial home with the intention of imposing unwanted sexual activities upon the bride, tragically resulting in her death.
It was further gathered that prior to the incident, the deceased had expressed her unwillingness to engage in marital relations with her husband, a conflict that persisted up until the unfortunate event.
Upon receiving a distress report, a team of police officers swiftly arrived at the scene, evacuating the victim’s body to the Gumel General Hospital. Medical professionals there confirmed her death upon examination. Her remains were subsequently handed over to her family for burial rites in accordance with tradition.
The four suspects have been arrested and are currently held in custody as the investigation continues. Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, has instructed that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dutse for comprehensive examination.
Following the conclusion of investigations, the suspects will be formally charged with criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide under the applicable legal provisions.
This tragic occurrence underscores the urgent need for widespread awareness and advocacy on marital rights and non-consensual acts within marriages, a topic increasingly gaining attention from international human rights organizations.
