Tragic Fire in Aba Prompts Immediate Action from Governor Otti

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has launched a full-scale investigation into a devastating fire outbreak that razed a two-storey residential building located at 73 Lagos Street, Aba. The directive follows disturbing reports that Fire Service officials in Aba were unreachable during the crisis, as their phone lines were allegedly switched off.

In response to the disaster, the Governor instructed his Senior Special Assistant on Homeland Security to lead the inquiry. The primary objective is to determine the cause of the fire and uncover why emergency responders failed to show up on time.

Governor Otti Expresses Concern Over Fire Service Negligence

During a visit to the fire victims on Friday, Governor Otti expressed deep regret over the incident, especially the lack of timely intervention by fire officials.

“This situation is unfortunate. Normally, the fire service responds within ten minutes. I’m shocked at how things turned out this time,” Otti lamented.

He assured the victims that the Abia State Government would provide emergency shelter and support as they recover from their losses. Fortunately, no lives were lost, although properties and personal belongings were completely destroyed.

New Safety Directive: Compulsory Fire Extinguishers in Every Household

Governor Otti emphasized the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures across the state. He announced the enforcement of a new policy mandating every household in Abia State to own and maintain a functional fire extinguisher.

This move aims to reduce future fire-related casualties and improve the state’s preparedness in the face of emergencies.

Eyewitnesses Recall Horrifying Experience

Mr. Vincent Uzuegbu, the landlord of the affected building, alongside his tenant Mr. Obinna Obi and his wife, recounted how they were asleep when the fire erupted. According to them, the fire consumed all their belongings within minutes, leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Their account further underscores the importance of swift emergency response and highlights the need for a comprehensive reform in the state’s fire service system.

Conclusion: Holding Emergency Services Accountable

The fire disaster in Aba serves as a wake-up call to review the state’s emergency response systems. Governor Otti’s swift intervention and his push for a thorough investigation show a strong commitment to public safety. As the victims begin to rebuild, it’s vital that accountability is established, and preventive measures are enforced statewide.
