Global Tensions: Gov Mbah Directs Enugu MDAs to Meet N870bn IGR Target

Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, has charged all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the state government to work diligently toward achieving the ₦870 billion Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) target outlined in the 2026 state budget.

The governor’s directive comes amid growing uncertainty surrounding external revenue inflows, particularly allocations from the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC), which he noted are increasingly affected by global geopolitical developments.

Governor Mbah issued the charge on Monday during a Holy Mass held at the Government House Chapel, which officially marked the commencement of work across all government offices for the new year.

Global Uncertainty and Revenue Sustainability

According to the governor, ongoing geopolitical tensions across different parts of the world have made reliance on external funding sources unpredictable. He emphasized that Enugu State must adopt proactive measures to safeguard its financial stability.

He warned that the state cannot afford to be caught off guard by external economic shocks, stressing that internal revenue generation remains the most reliable buffer against global uncertainties.

Breakdown of Enugu’s 2026 Budget

Governor Mbah recently signed into law a ₦1.62 trillion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, the largest in the state’s history. The funding structure of the budget includes:

• ₦870 billion expected from Internally Generated Revenue
• ₦387 billion projected from FAAC allocations
• ₦329 billion anticipated from capital receipts

He explained that meeting the IGR target is critical to sustaining capital projects and public service delivery in the face of fluctuating external revenue streams.

Call for Commitment from MDAs and Civil Servants

Speaking before an audience that included leaders of the three arms of government, political appointees, traditional rulers, industry stakeholders, and senior civil servants, Governor Mbah urged all public officials to intensify their efforts.

He stated that revenue growth is directly linked to the efficiency, speed, and quality of services rendered by government institutions to businesses and residents.

He emphasized that each MDA has a defined role to play in meeting the ambitious revenue projections, urging workers to approach their responsibilities with renewed energy and dedication.

Emphasis on Discipline and Teamwork

Governor Mbah described civil servants as the backbone of the administration’s success, stressing the importance of punctuality, prompt document processing, and inter-departmental collaboration.

He encouraged workers to uphold a strong culture of teamwork, noting that government performance is only as effective as its weakest link. According to him, collective effort remains essential to achieving the administration’s development objectives.

While expressing gratitude to the people of Enugu State and the Christian community for their continued prayers and support, the governor acknowledged that no administration is flawless.

In his homily, the Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, Rev. Fr. Anthony Udeh, described Governor Mbah as a servant-leader deeply committed to the welfare of the people.
