Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island in the Republic of Kiribati, was the first location to ring in the new year. This small Pacific island celebrated 2025 at 11:00 am Nigerian time (WAT) on December 31, 2024. Shortly after, the Chatham Islands of New Zealand welcomed the year at 11:15 am WAT.
New Zealand’s major cities, Auckland and Wellington, followed with grand fireworks displays at noon Nigerian time. Thousands gathered in Auckland, either downtown or atop volcanic peaks, to enjoy stunning views of the celebrations.
Across the Pacific: Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji Join the Fun
The festivities spread swiftly to Tonga, Samoa, and Fiji, where the new year’s arrival was met with equal enthusiasm. Shortly after, Australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Canberra joined in with dazzling fireworks shows at 3:00 pm WAT. Sydney Harbour, a world-famous destination for New Year’s celebrations, saw over a million attendees enjoying spectacular pyrotechnics.

The East Welcomes 2025: Japan, Korea, and China
As time moved forward, Japan, South Korea, and North Korea celebrated the new year at 4:00 pm WAT on December 31. Western Australia followed, with cities like Perth leading festivities at 4:15 pm WAT. These regions embraced the new year with a mix of traditional and modern celebrations, illuminating the skies with vibrant fireworks.
