Ghana Arrests 141 Nigerians Over Alleged Cybercrime Activities

Ghanaian authorities have arrested no fewer than 141 Nigerian nationals in connection with alleged cyber-enabled financial crimes, marking one of the country’s most coordinated crackdowns on digital fraud in recent times.

The development was officially confirmed by Ghana’s Commissioner for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel George, who made the disclosure in a public statement released on Saturday.

According to the statement, the arrests followed a well-coordinated early-morning security operation carried out by the Cyber Security Authority of Ghana, working jointly with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Immigration Service.

Locations Targeted During the Operation

Security agencies carried out the operation across two major locations known for heightened digital activity:

• Tabora, where 100 suspects were apprehended
• Lashibi, where an additional 41 suspects were taken into custody

This brought the total number of arrests to 141 individuals, all of whom are believed to be Nigerian nationals, based on preliminary findings from investigators.

Devices and Digital Tools Recovered

During the raid, law enforcement officials recovered several electronic devices believed to have been used in executing cyber-related financial crimes. These included:

• 38 laptop computers
• 150 mobile phones

Authorities stated that these devices are currently undergoing forensic digital examination to determine the extent of their use in fraudulent online operations.

Arrest of a Ghanaian Landlord

In a related development, a Ghanaian landlord was also arrested during the operation. Investigators alleged that the landlord provided accommodation to approximately 100 of the suspects within a single property.

Officials emphasized that property owners have a legal and civic duty to ensure their premises are not used as safe havens for criminal activities, especially those involving cyber and financial fraud.

Nature of the Alleged Crimes

The suspects are believed to be connected to a range of cyber-enabled financial offences, including but not limited to:

• Mobile money fraud
• Romance scams
• Sextortion schemes
• Business Email Compromise (BEC)
• Wire fraud

Authorities noted that these crimes often exploit digital platforms, social engineering techniques, and financial technology systems to deceive victims.

Ongoing Investigations and Legal Process

Ghanaian security agencies confirmed that forensic analysis of the seized devices is currently underway. Individuals found to be directly involved in criminal activities will be processed and prosecuted in accordance with Ghanaian law.

The government reiterated its determination to ensure that justice is served and that cybercrime networks operating within its borders are dismantled.

Public Advisory and Government Warning

The authorities also urged the general public to remain alert and report suspicious digital activities to the appropriate agencies.

While reaffirming Ghana’s openness to lawful residents, investors, and visitors, the government issued a strong warning to criminals who intend to misuse the country’s digital space.

Ghana remains open and welcoming to friends and neighbours who pursue legitimate ventures. However, anyone engaged in cybercrime will be identified, arrested, and dealt with decisively under Ghanaian law.
