Legendary German footballer Jérôme Boateng, a 2014 FIFA World Cup winner and two-time UEFA Champions League champion with Bayern Munich (2013, 2020), officially confirmed on Friday, September 19, 2025, that he is hanging up his boots at the age of 37.
The former Germany international centre-back shared a heartfelt video clip across his social media platforms on Friday evening. In the one-minute farewell, Boateng reflected on his illustrious journey in football, paying tribute to the clubs, teammates, fans, and family who supported him throughout his career.
“I have played for many years, represented some of the biggest clubs, and proudly wore my country’s jersey. I experienced victories, defeats, and countless lessons that shaped me,” Boateng expressed in his Instagram post, which featured highlights from his career.
“Football has given me everything. Now, I believe it is the right time to step away—not because I must, but because I am ready. I will forever be thankful to my teams, supporters, coaches, and above all, my family and children who stood by me through it all.”
Boateng’s Career with Germany and Bayern Munich
Boateng earned 76 caps for Germany, scoring one international goal. He played a crucial role in the German squad that lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where his defensive resilience helped secure the nation’s fourth world title.
At club level, he achieved remarkable success with Bayern Munich, winning:

- 9 Bundesliga titles

Early Life and Club Career Journey
Born in Berlin, Jérôme Boateng developed his footballing foundation at Hertha Berlin’s academy, alongside his older half-brother, Kevin-Prince Boateng, who also went on to enjoy a professional career.
After progressing through Hamburg SV, Boateng made a short stint in the Premier League with Manchester City before making a career-defining move to Bayern Munich.
Following his departure from Bayern in 2021, Boateng played across Europe, representing Lyon in France, Salernitana in Italy, and finally LASK in Austria. His contract with LASK was mutually terminated in August 2025.
