A sudden explosion caused widespread panic on Tuesday at the Alake Sports Complex, located in the Ijeja area of Abeokuta, Ogun State, one of the official venues for the 2024 National Sports Festival.
According to eyewitness accounts, the explosion resulted from a fire that ignited while a gas truck was delivering fuel to the complex’s power generator. The incident triggered alarm among both athletes and spectators who were nearby, prompting a frantic dash for safety.
Emergency management officials responded promptly, arriving at the scene to contain the fire and restore order to the facility.
As of the time of reporting, no casualties had been officially confirmed.
Despite the scare, the sporting events at the complex—including handball, squash, and badminton—resumed later in the day, as the situation was successfully brought under control.
