Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has urged politicians to prioritize public welfare and development over personal interests. His remarks came during the commissioning of Okocha Road in Rumuolumeni, Obio Akpor Local Government Area (LGA), the hometown of Nyesom Wike, former Rivers State Governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. Wike had also served as Obio Akpor’s chairman from 1999 to 2007.
The backdrop of Fubara’s statement highlights the political tensions between him and Wike over control of Rivers State’s political landscape. Despite their differences, Fubara used the occasion to underscore his administration’s commitment to service delivery.
“Politics shouldn’t revolve solely around support or opposition. It should address the people’s needs. If I were a malicious leader, I wouldn’t come here, considering the circumstances surrounding this location. However, government exists to serve, to safeguard lives, and to ensure the happiness of the people,” he stated.
Fubara expressed gratitude to the Rumuolumeni community for their support during his election, acknowledging their significant voting strength and the role they played in his administration’s success.
“This road project signifies our appreciation. It alleviates the suffering of residents here and turns around what was once an unbearable living condition. Today, this community is filled with joy, and the transformation is evident,” Fubara remarked.
He emphasized that governance is about improving lives, providing essential services, and putting smiles on people’s faces, irrespective of political affiliations or circumstances.
