The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has raised serious alarm over the increasing involvement of public figures in unsafe driving behaviors, particularly those who create content for social media while operating vehicles on public roads.
The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, expressed deep concern about what he described as a troubling rise in reckless road usage among celebrities, digital creators, and social media influencers. According to him, such actions not only endanger the individuals involved but also expose other road users to avoidable risks, thereby weakening ongoing national road safety campaigns.
This warning comes in response to a viral video featuring popular TikTok streamer and content creator Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller. In the circulating footage, Peller was reportedly seen engaging in a live video broadcast while driving, an act that contradicts established road safety regulations.
Reports indicate that the act resulted in a road traffic crash, drawing widespread public attention and renewed discussions around responsible behavior by influential personalities. The FRSC emphasized that the use of mobile devices while driving remains one of the leading causes of road accidents, as it significantly reduces concentration and reaction time.
The Corps Marshal reiterated that no individual is above the law, regardless of fame or online following. He stressed that influencers and celebrities hold powerful positions in society and should serve as positive examples rather than promote behaviors that could lead to loss of lives or property.
The FRSC further noted that actions taken against offenders are not meant to target individuals personally but to send a strong message on the importance of adhering to traffic laws. The agency warned that continued violations by public figures could encourage imitation among young followers, worsening the country’s road safety challenges.
As part of its commitment to safer roads, the FRSC confirmed that appropriate legal steps would be taken to ensure accountability, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on distracted driving and other traffic violations.
