David Jimkuta, the Senator representing Taraba South, has urged political leaders to stay connected with their roots and prioritize their constituents, regardless of their current status. Speaking at the Nigeria Law School in Bwari, Abuja, Jimkuta shared his humble beginnings as an Okada rider (commercial motorcyclist) and commended Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike for supporting the school.
Supporting Constituencies: A Leader’s Responsibility
During the event, where Wike donated seven vehicles and launched the construction of 10 four-bedroom staff bungalows, Senator Jimkuta praised the minister for giving back to his alma mater. He highlighted the importance of remembering and supporting one’s primary constituency, stating:
“Before becoming a senator, I was once an Okada man. I still give back to them because that’s where I come from. What the minister is doing is commendable—it’s about giving, not politics. Whoever thinks otherwise should try their luck.”
Jimkuta emphasized the value of staying grounded and giving back, reflecting his commitment to uplifting his community.
Overcoming Political Challenges
Senator Jimkuta’s rise to the Senate wasn’t without challenges. During the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, he secured 170 votes to defeat his opponent, Danjuma Shiddi, the incumbent House of Representatives member. However, his name was initially excluded from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) list in favor of Shiddi.
Undeterred, Jimkuta took the matter to court. Although he lost at the Federal High Court in Jalingo, he triumphed at the appellate court. Shiddi escalated the case to the Supreme Court, where Jimkuta once again emerged victorious, solidifying his place on the ballot.
A Historic Electoral Win
In the general senatorial election, Jimkuta pulled off a significant upset by defeating the then-incumbent Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate. Jimkuta garnered 85,415 votes, while Ishaku managed 45,708 votes—a testament to the senator’s resilience and strong connection with the people.

Jimkuta’s journey from an Okada rider to a senator is a powerful story of perseverance and humility. His advocacy for supporting primary constituencies serves as a reminder to leaders to remain grounded and prioritize those who helped them rise.
