From LASU To The US: My Scholarship Success Story – Oyesiji Oyewusi

The journey from Lagos State University (LASU) to the United States was one I never anticipated. It has been a transformative experience filled with resilience, faith, and countless opportunities that international education and relocation can offer.

I began my academic journey at LASU’s School of Communication, where I pursued a degree in Broadcast and Communication Technology. Those years came with their fair share of challenges. Lectures were rigorous, assignments seemed endless, and resources were limited. Yet, amidst these struggles, I discovered my passion for storytelling and communication.

One of the most memorable highlights of my time at LASU was serving as the editor for Watzup Mag, the university’s student magazine. Alongside a committed team, we wrote articles on student life, fashion, and entertainment, often working tirelessly into the night. Despite the lack of funding, we persevered, fueled by support from those who believed in our mission. This experience taught me the power of collaboration and resilience.

I graduated in 2010 with a B.Sc. in Communication Technology, but my dream of pursuing a master’s degree had to be put on hold. Life’s responsibilities and self-doubt kept me waiting for 12 years. However, the desire to further my education never left me. My late father’s unwavering belief in education and encouragement from mentors gave me the strength to try again.

In 2022, I took a bold step and applied to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for a Master’s in Strategic Communication. Moving to the US was daunting—a new culture, unfamiliar systems, and academic expectations that pushed me out of my comfort zone. The application process itself was overwhelming, but my faith and determination kept me focused.

Relocating has been a life-changing decision. The advanced educational system in the US offers resources I could only dream of back home. The opportunities for research, access to modern facilities, and the chance to engage with a global network of professionals have been invaluable. Beyond academics, this exposure has reshaped my thinking and broadened my perspectives.

Winning the Dr. Jung-Sook Lee Memorial Endowment Scholarship was a turning point in my journey. This prestigious award, granted in recognition of academic excellence and resilience, went beyond financial support. It was a testament to the sacrifices, challenges, and determination that had brought me this far.

This entire experience has reinforced a vital lesson: when you believe in yourself and trust the process, anything is possible. Relocation isn’t just about changing your physical environment; it’s about transforming your mindset, expanding your worldview, and unlocking new possibilities.

On December 20th, I will proudly walk across the stage to receive my Master’s degree in Communication. It’s a surreal and fulfilling moment that marks the culmination of years of perseverance. This milestone is not just about earning a degree—it’s a personal triumph that proves the rewards of resilience and hard work.

Looking ahead, I’m considering the pursuit of a Ph.D.—a prospect that excites and intimidates me at the same time. For now, I remain deeply grateful for how far I’ve come and eagerly anticipate the opportunities that lie ahead.
