Former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jimmy Carter has passed away at the age of 100. He died peacefully on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia, following nearly two years in hospice care, according to reports from his son, Chip Carter.
Carter, who served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, holds the record as the longest-living U.S. president in history. His presidency is remembered for landmark achievements like the Camp David Accords, which established peace between Egypt and Israel. However, his administration faced challenges, including the Iran hostage crisis and domestic economic difficulties.
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, James Earl Carter Jr. grew up as the son of a farmer and a nurse. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, he joined the Navy and became part of the esteemed nuclear submarine fleet. In 1953, he left his military career to manage his family’s farm after his father’s death, marking the beginning of his journey into politics.
Carter’s influence extended far beyond his presidency. Together with his wife Rosalynn, who passed away in November 2023, he co-founded the Carter Center, a global organization dedicated to humanitarian aid and advancing democracy. The couple became known for their hands-on volunteerism, particularly through their work with Habitat for Humanity, building homes for those in need.
The Carters earned numerous accolades during their lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Former President Bill Clinton praised them as a couple who had done “more good for more people in more places than any other couple on Earth.”
Jimmy Carter is survived by his children Amy, Chip, Jack, and Jeff, along with 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
The world mourns Carter’s passing but celebrates his enduring legacy as a leader, a peace advocate, and a humanitarian committed to improving lives worldwide.
