Former Guinean Minister Sentenced To 5 Years For Corruption

In a landmark ruling, Guinea’s former Defense Minister Mohamed Diané has been sentenced to five years in prison on charges of corruption, illicit enrichment, embezzlement, and money laundering.

Diané, who held office from 2015 to 2021 during ex-President Alpha Condé’s tenure, faces additional penalties including a $58.5 million fine. His properties in Conakry and Kankan, as well as his bank accounts, have been confiscated by the state.

The court determined that Diané could not substantiate the origins of his substantial wealth. He has been in custody since May 2022, following the military junta’s sweeping anti-corruption campaign, initiated after their 2021 coup.

Led by Gen Mamady Doumbouya, the junta has positioned the fight against corruption as a top priority for Guinea. This effort included the establishment of a special anti-corruption court, which has overseen legal actions against over 180 individuals, including high-ranking officials and former President Alpha Condé, by the end of 2022.

While the campaign initially garnered widespread support, critics argue that it has evolved into a tool for political persecution. Allegations have surfaced that the junta is stalling Guinea’s democratic transition. Promised elections and a referendum on a new constitution remain unfulfilled, fueling concerns that Gen Doumbouya may be consolidating power rather than facilitating reform.
