On May 8, 2025, an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated near a construction site in Mafa Local Government Area, Borno State, injuring five children, including one who lost a hand.

The explosion occurred around 2:25 PM when the children—Abdullahi Umar, Musa Mele, Fatima Abatcha, Abba Kawu Muhammed, and Khalid Alhaji Bukar—unintentionally tampered with IEDs concealed in block holes near a culvert on the access road to the New Mafa Central Mosque construction site

Emergency response teams from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal-Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (EOD-CBRN) Unit, Mafa Division Police, and the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) promptly arrived at the scene. They secured the area, searched for additional explosive devices, and safely detonated remnants of the IEDs, which were found to be improvised using can tins .

Four of the injured children were transferred to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for further treatment, while the fifth, who sustained minor injuries, received care at Mafa General Hospital and was subsequently discharged.

In response to the incident, the EOD-CBRN team conducted Explosive Ordnance Risk Education (EORE) sessions for children and community members in Mafa to raise awareness about the dangers of unexploded ordnance and promote safe behavior
