FG Screening Candidates for Ambassadorial Positions 18 Months After Recall

1 minute, 24 seconds Read

The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced the vetting process for new ambassadorial appointments nearly 18 months after President Bola Tinubu recalled all ambassadors. According to a report by Reuters, the selection process is in its final stages, with appointments expected to be announced soon.

Vetting Process Underway for New Ambassadors

Government sources revealed that intelligence agencies are conducting background checks on prospective candidates. The gathered information is reportedly being shared with relevant authorities within the presidency and the legislature to ensure due diligence in the selection process.

President Tinubu had ordered the recall of all career and non-career ambassadors in September 2023, just six months into his administration. Since then, the government has appointed consuls-general and chargés d’affaires, but the confirmation of substantive ambassadors has been pending.

Concerns Over Diplomatic Void

Despite Nigeria receiving several letters of credence from foreign diplomats stationed in the country, concerns have been raised over the prolonged absence of Nigerian ambassadors in key global missions. Foreign policy analysts and international stakeholders have pointed out that this diplomatic gap could affect Nigeria’s foreign relations and global representation.

Financial Constraints Delayed Appointments

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, previously cited financial constraints as the primary reason for the delay in appointing new ambassadors. However, a senior government official told Reuters that the issue has been addressed and that an official announcement is imminent.

The Federal Government has allocated N302.4 billion for its foreign missions in the 2025 budget, signaling a commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic presence worldwide (Source).
