FG Begins Vetting Process for New Ambassadors, 18 Months After Recall

The Nigerian federal government has commenced the screening process for appointing new ambassadors, nearly two years after President Bola Tinubu recalled all previous envoys. According to a report by Reuters, credible sources confirm that the vetting process is currently underway, signaling an imminent announcement of their replacements.

Ambassadorial Vetting Underway

An intelligence officer disclosed that thorough background checks are being conducted on potential appointees. The gathered information is reportedly being shared with relevant governmental bodies, including the presidency and legislature, to facilitate the selection process.

In September 2023, President Tinubu recalled all career and non-career ambassadors, just six months into his administration. Since then, only consuls-general and chargés d’affaires have been appointed, leaving key diplomatic positions unfilled.

Concerns Over Diplomatic Leadership Void

Despite foreign ambassadors continuing to present their letters of credence to the Nigerian government, the absence of officially appointed envoys has raised concerns among international stakeholders. Many foreign officials have voiced apprehensions over the prolonged diplomatic leadership gap at Nigeria’s foreign missions.

Delay Due to Funding Challenges

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, attributed the delay in appointing ambassadors to budgetary constraints. However, a government insider assured Reuters that the issue is being addressed, paving the way for the imminent announcement of new diplomatic representatives.

As part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s foreign relations, the federal government has earmarked N302.4 billion for its foreign missions in the 2025 budget.

Conclusion

With the vetting process now in progress, new ambassadorial appointments are expected soon, ending a prolonged diplomatic vacuum. This development is anticipated to enhance Nigeria’s international representation and strengthen global partnerships.
