Fenerbahce has come out in defense of their manager, Jose Mourinho, following an altercation with Galatasaray’s head coach, Okan Buruk, during the Turkish Cup on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred after Fenerbahce’s 2-1 home loss to Galatasaray, with Mourinho now facing a potential suspension.
What Happened During the Incident?
Mourinho reportedly grabbed Buruk by the nose, causing Buruk to fall to the ground. The confrontation took place after the match had concluded, as both managers were on the pitch, and it required intervention from Mourinho’s coaching staff to separate the two.
Following the incident, Mourinho was not allowed to speak with the press during the post-match conference due to receiving a red card. However, Fenerbahce has since issued a public statement defending their manager and providing their perspective on the situation.
Fenerbahce’s Official Statement
In a statement released on Thursday, Fenerbahce elaborated on the events, claiming that Buruk had approached Mourinho, who was in the process of speaking to the referees after the match, under the guise of a handshake. The statement continued to explain that Buruk made provocative hand gestures and disrespectful remarks before crossing the police line.
Fenerbahce further explained that Mourinho’s brief response, a touch to Buruk’s nose, was a reaction to these provocations. The club also accused Buruk of dramatically throwing himself to the ground, exaggerating the situation as if he had been “shot” to continue his planned provocations. The incident was captured on video and the club insists the footage will back up their claims.
