A series of rulings by U.S. federal judges have blocked significant portions of former President Donald Trump’s recent executive orders targeting voting laws, immigration enforcement, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies in schools. The decisions mark a substantial legal setback for Trump’s ongoing policy efforts during the election season.
Court Blocks Citizenship Requirement in Voter Registration
In a high-profile ruling, U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly ruled against a March 25 executive order by President Trump that sought to include a proof of citizenship requirement on the federal voter registration form. The Democratic Party filed a legal challenge, arguing that the president lacks constitutional authority to alter federal election laws unilaterally.
The judge agreed with the plaintiffs, issuing an injunction that prevents federal agencies from requiring individuals to verify citizenship before offering them voter registration opportunities—especially when applying for assistance at public agencies.
Federal Judge Pushes Back Against DEI Funding Cuts in Schools
In another critical decision, Judge Landya McCafferty stopped the U.S. Department of Education from enforcing part of a memo that would strip funding from schools unless they eliminate DEI initiatives. According to her ruling, these actions “erode foundational democratic principles” and echo tactics used by authoritarian regimes.
The memo had threatened schools with federal funding cuts if they continued implementing programs perceived to promote racial equity or identity-based learning—policies the Trump administration classified as discriminatory.
Immigration Order Violates Court Settlement
Meanwhile, Judge Stephanie Gallagher ruled that the Trump administration must request the return of a Salvadoran national who had been deported in violation of an existing court settlement. The judge emphasized the deportation was carried out in bad faith and mandated that no further deportations occur under similar conditions.
Sanctuary City Funding Withholding Declared Unlawful
In a final ruling, Judge William Orrick blocked attempts by the Trump administration to withhold federal funds from jurisdictions known as sanctuary cities. These cities had declined to fully cooperate with immigration enforcement efforts. Orrick determined that the executive action was unconstitutional and violated previous federal agreements.
