The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has successfully recovered a black Toyota Land Cruiser SUV—registration number ABC 797—stolen at gunpoint by five armed suspects in the Garki district on the night of April 23, 2025.
In a detailed press briefing issued on Friday, Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that the car was forcefully taken from a resident, Alhaji Nasiru Aminu, at about 8:35 PM. The perpetrators, all clad in black attire, reportedly discharged multiple gunshots into the air to disperse bystanders before fleeing the scene with the stolen vehicle.
Following a swift distress alert, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) immediately contacted the Command’s Control Room. A coordinated response was launched, mobilizing the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and activating stop-and-search checkpoints across major routes in the FCT.
Led by Maitama Division’s CSP Altine Daniel in collaboration with the Police Technical Intelligence Unit (TIU), a real-time tracking operation commenced. The intelligence-led efforts culminated in a rapid interception move, prompting the suspects to abandon the vehicle beneath Banex Bridge. They fled in a backup escape vehicle waiting nearby.
Remarkably, the stolen SUV was retrieved intact within 30 minutes—around 9:00 PM—after it was taken. A search of the car uncovered 9mm ammunition, and the rightful owner has been identified and is in the process of reclaiming the vehicle through official procedures.
Preliminary findings suggest that the culprits belong to a well-known criminal syndicate involved in car theft and armed robbery incidents around the Wuse and Maitama zones. The gang has long been under surveillance by law enforcement agencies, and a manhunt is underway to arrest the remaining fugitives.
Commending the successful operation, FCT Police Commissioner CP Ajao S. Adewale praised the officers’ swift and tactical response. He also urged residents to install digital vehicle tracking systems, which are instrumental in both crime deterrence and quick asset recovery.
