Nigeria: Justice For Offa Bank Robbers

Father of six jailed nine months for drug trafficking

On Friday, a 49-year-old carpenter and father of six, Ademola Oke, was sentenced to nine months in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos for drug trafficking.

Oke was brought before Justice Ayokunle Faji on November 1 by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on a two-count charge related to dealing in restricted narcotics. He admitted guilt.

The defense lawyer urged the court for leniency, noting that Oke was a first-time offender who promised to reform.

In delivering the sentence, Justice Faji pointed out that Oke had been involved in selling drugs illegally for six years as a source of income. The judge sentenced him to nine months for each count, to be served concurrently from the date of his arrest.

The prosecutor, Korinjo Aondofa, outlined the case details and presented supporting documents, including a request for scientific aid form, a packaging form, Oke’s statement, and the bulk of the substances in question.

Based on Oke’s plea and the evidence, the court found him guilty. The prosecution disclosed that Oke was caught with 181 grams of cannabis and 4.48 grams of methamphetamine, both classified as prohibited substances similar to cocaine and heroin under the NDLEA schedule.

The offence violated Section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act, Cap N30, Law of the Federation, 2004.
