Liverpool manager Arne Slot has openly admitted his surprise that Chelsea did not emerge as one of the key challengers for the Premier League title this season.
Slot made this statement during a post-match interview following Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Despite the loss, Liverpool maintains a commanding 19-point lead over Chelsea, who are currently placed 5th on the EPL table.
Throughout the 2024–25 Premier League season, the Reds have outpaced their domestic competitors, ultimately securing a record-equalling 20th English league title. By the time they confirmed their championship, Liverpool had suffered just two losses, accumulating an impressive 82 points from 35 games.
When asked if he sees Chelsea as potential title contenders next season, Slot responded:
“I actually thought they would be a major threat this season.
They were better than us at Anfield and felt very close to our level. That’s why I’m truly surprised we now lead them by 18 points. I didn’t sense that kind of gap during our encounter.”
Slot continued by emphasizing the quality within Chelsea’s squad and how Liverpool’s performance stands out in light of that:
“This really highlights how well our players have performed.
If we’re able to go 18 points clear of a side filled with top-tier talent like Chelsea, then that’s a huge compliment to my team. They [Chelsea] are filled with quality players.”
