Former Newcastle United shot-stopper, Shay Given, has openly questioned Chelsea’s decision to allow Noni Madueke to join their London rivals, Arsenal, during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea’s management sanctioned the sale of the England international despite his notable contributions to the team since arriving from PSV Eindhoven in 2023. Madueke, who developed into a reliable forward, recorded 20 goals in 92 appearances for the Blues and was instrumental in their success last season.

The talented winger played a vital role in helping Enzo Maresca’s squad secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League while also lifting the Europa Conference League trophy. His performances highlighted his growth and potential, making his departure even more puzzling for fans and pundits alike.

In response to Madueke’s exit, Chelsea moved quickly to strengthen their squad by securing the signature of Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United in a £40 million transfer deal.

However, Shay Given, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, expressed shock over the transfer strategy.

“I’m honestly surprised that Chelsea decided to part ways with Noni Madueke. Looking at their replacement, Alejandro Garnacho, you would argue at this stage that Madueke is significantly ahead in terms of ability and overall development,” Given stated.

The ex-Premier League goalkeeper further emphasized that Madueke’s growth is far from complete:

“Madueke is still young and has so much room for improvement. Working under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal will only enhance his game. From what I can see, he is enjoying his role and adapting quickly to life at the Emirates.”

Given’s remarks highlight the ongoing debate about Chelsea’s squad management and whether they made the right call in letting a talented player like Madueke leave for a direct rival.

For fans, the move raises questions about Chelsea’s long-term strategy, especially as Arsenal appears to be benefiting greatly from the young winger’s flair and determination.
