EPL: Maresca Explains Why Chelsea Will Offer Liverpool a Guard of Honour on Sunday

1 minute, 7 seconds Read

Chelsea’s head coach, Enzo Maresca, has confirmed that his team will give reigning champions Liverpool a guard of honour this Sunday.

For a significant part of the season, Chelsea was Liverpool’s closest rival at the top of the Premier League. However, after defeats to Fulham and Ipswich during the Christmas period, Maresca’s side lost momentum.

The Italian manager explained that he wants his players to understand the significance of the gesture, encouraging them to think, “One day, I hope we’ll be in that position.”

Chelsea, who are still fighting for a Champions League qualification spot, will face Arne Slot’s team on Sunday. Maresca is determined to reduce the gap between his side and Liverpool.

Regarding the guard of honour, Maresca commented, “It’s a tradition. We must do it, and we will. They’ve won the Premier League, and they deserve this recognition.”

When asked about the gap between Chelsea and Liverpool, Maresca acknowledged it, saying, “You can clearly see the difference. But I feel like we are heading in the right direction, and hopefully, the gap will continue to shrink.”
